New User Experience in PTC Creo Parametric Versus Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0

New User Experience in PTC Creo Parametric

The PTC Creo Parametric vs. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 blog series has covered areas such as cross sectioning, measuring geometry ,sheet metal, assembly performance, and 3D annotations.

This week I will discuss the major improvements to the user experience, which are available in every base license of PTC Creo Parametric.

1) Ribbon Interface
The most extensive change to the user experience has been the addition of a ribbon interface, which has been made popular by common Microsoft Office products. Top level menus have been organized into the ribbon, which runs across the top portion of the screen. Similar tasks are organized into command groups which allows you to find them faster and with fewer clicks. For example, the “Modeling” tab contains all modeling related commands. Finally, tailoring the PTC Creo Parametric UI to your specific needs is very easy to accomplish and doesn’t require any special coding.

2) Command Finder
In past releases, if you were not able to find a specific command you would need to search the help documentation, such as the Menu Mapper, or Ask your Neighbor. In PTC Creo Parametric, you simply start typing the name of the lost command in the Command Finder box and it presents a list of matches. From here, you will be able to access the command directly and also learn the navigation path to find it in the new UI. Command Finder also works for SolidWorks commands. This is extremely helpful in terms of reducing the time it takes to become productive when moving from that CAD platform. For popular commands, the quick access toolbar is right in the viewport.

3) Access to the Learning Connector
There is an icon located at the top of the main dashboard which points users directly to the Learning Connector. I’ve mentioned previously that the Learning Connector is free and has over 170 free video tutorials for PTC Creo 1.0 and PTC Creo 2.0. The information is also context- sensitive, so If you are having trouble with a specific command the relevant help content will appear automatically. All of this information is available without having to leave the program.

4) Improved Dynamic Editing
With the improved dynamic editing capabilities, working with features is quick and easy. You can simply double click on a feature to modify it in real time. This greatly boosts the speed at which you can make design changes.

These user experience improvements to PTC Creo Parametric will save you significant time and effort compared to Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 (up to 20% according to a third-party benchmark). The new user experience is just one reason to make a move. Have a look at this head to head comparison video to see all the changes for yourself:
