The Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) is the largest institute specializing in laser science and technology in China. With multiple areas of research interest, hundreds of employees, and several CAD systems, SIOM found itself with thousands of poorly managed models and drawings. Here’s how they fixed it.
Too Much Data, Too Hard to Find
SIOM researchers investigate many optics-related fields, including high-power laser technology, high-field laser physics, high-intensity optics, information optics, quantum optics, laser and optoelectronic devices, and optical materials. They support these efforts with

- 450 PhD and Masters of Science students.
- 800+ employees, including more than 200 senior researchers.
In an organization that size, the 2D and 3D output builds quickly. Each research team requires CAD to design its prototypes, from experimental platforms to table-top ultra-intense and ultra-short pulse laser systems. That’s led to thousands of files spread across different research labs and computers. And that’s led to difficulties finding files when they’re needed.
To complicate matters, all those files aren’t in the same CAD format. The organization historically has worked in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Pro/ENGINEER. So, even if an engineer could find a file, it might be difficult to open.
The result has been that design data isn’t easy to leverage. That is, existing data can be hard to find and open, and often team members find it more convenient to create a new model rather than find an old one. That leads to wasted time and adds unnecessary data to the confusion!
The PDM + PTC Creo Solution
SIOM solved the problem by adopting new CAD and PDM software. By better managing data, the group hoped to address its multi-CAD issues and significantly improve cross-team design data collaboration.
Working with an authorized PTC Reseller, SIOM deployed PTC Creo and PTC Windchill PDMLink to manage all forms of digital data throughout product development and across the laboratories.

The Results Are In
How did it work out for SIOM? Instantly, there was a 50% decrease in the time it takes to search and find parts. That led to fewer designs needing to be recreated, and an overall 20% efficiency improvement across product design.
